Devotion of Whole Life to Education in Pediatric Surgery

Ham Yong Hwan, who had been the dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine at Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences in the latter half of the 1990s, worked as the first head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences, the pedigree establishment of Juche-oriented medical education from September 1997 to July 2019, under the warm care of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

He pioneered 2 new courses and wrote 28 important books and references, including “Pediatric Surgery” and “Illustrations of Pediatric Surgery”, in the course of his work. He proactively studied and introduced to clinical practice the valuable medical achievements in clinical practices, including granular skin autoplasty on deep and extensive burns over the whole body among children, pediatric esophageal plastic surgery, operations on pediatric deformed rectum, congenital cystic duct blocking and dilation, neonate hepatorectomy, post-op prophylactic pain management system.

He is now the chairman of the Pediatric Surgery Committee of the Korean Association of Medical Sciences, and still works with youthful vigor in his advanced age in order to pave a way to advanced world-class medical science branch and train skillful pediatric surgeons.
