A bird fossil of Mesozoic Era was recently unearthed in Paektho-dong Area, Sinuiju City.

In the course of more intensive survey and research to newly designate the location of Paektho-dong Fossil Reserve, the paleontological research team of the Faculty of Geology, Kim Il Sung University, has discovered a bird fossil (130 million years old) rare in the world in the third section of principal Sinuiju layer belonging to the late cretaceous layer of Mesozoic Era in Paektho-dong Area: still well-preserved are a piece of its skull, toe bones and 11 quills with their fledges.

On the basis of the morphological and structural characteristics of its quills, the researchers have academically proved that the bird was adapted to flying.

At the same time, they discovered the fossils of dinosaur teeth, primitive mammals and fishes, and made research into the unearthed fossils of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and plants to prove on a scientific basis that Paektho-dong Area is the place of origin for all vertebrate animals of the country in the Mesozoic Era.

And they have newly identified the Sinuiju biotic community representing the late cretaceous period of Mesozoic Era and reconfirmed the Paektho-dong Fossil Reserve to be of high academic significance for the research into the ecological environment of Mesozoic Era in Korea.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un saw to it that the bird of Mesozoic Era unearthed in Paektho-dong Area of Sinuiju City be named as Paektho Bird and took a benevolent measure to exhibit it in the Nature Museum under the General Bureau of Pleasure Grounds for education of the youth and students and for scientific research.

The recent discovery and historical confirmation of the bird fossil of Mesozoic Era preserved in Paektho-dong Area of Sinuiju City has made it possible to prove on a scientific basis that Korea is the original cradle of not only human beings but also birds.
