Kye Ung Sang

Geneticist Kye Ung Sang (Dec. 27, 1893 – April 24, 1967) was born in Jongju County, North Phyongan Province.

Having finished the course of Sodang (village school) at the age of 19, Mr. Kye Ung Sang graduated from Seoul Posong Middle School in April, 1911, and from April, Juche 4(1915) worked as a teacher at JOngju Osan Middle School.

He graduated from Kyushu Imperial University of Japan in April, Juche 12(1923), and while attending the post-graduate course there, he made public a series of theses on silkworm genetics, physiology and anatmy

He tried his best to engage himself in scientific research in China, Vietnam and Japan from April, Juche 19(1930), and then, at Kyonggi Provincial Agricultural Research Institute and Jaeryong Sericulture Research Institute from Juche 28(1939), only to experience misery of being an intellectual of the colonized nation.

Only when he was embraced by President Kim Il Sung in October, Juche 35(1946) after liberation of the country, was he able to concentrate on education and scientific research at Kim Il Sung University.

In October, Juche 35(1946), President Kim Il Sung personally met him; he encouraged him to have the scientific belief of Juche and led him to live an honoured life as a scientist.

He academically systematized his scientific research achievements and experience gained in practical production to author a number of essays, as well as scientific and technological books.

Under the warm care and affection of President Kim Il Sung, he took such important positions as dean of the Faculty of Agronomy at Kim Il Sung University, director of Sericulture Research Institute and Chairman of the Committee of Agricultural Science.

He was a deputy to the Supreme People’s Assembly, Academician, Professor and Doctor of Science.
